WANAMAKER'S Christmas Light Show - sweet memories
Yeah, yeah, yeah - Wanamaker's is now Macy's. Maybe so, but the Holiday Light Show will always be Wanamaker's to ME!
For those who weren't raised on Christmas trips to Philadelphia, lunch at the Woolworth's counter, standing gob-swoggled year after year after year in the Grand Court watching the light & music & fountain show - get thee down post haste! For those lucky ones - like all the Lockhart kids - already steeped in this joyous tradition, think twice before remembering glorious yesteryears. Unless you have grandkids, it's not worth it for those who remember the wide aisles (now crammed with merchandise), the glorious lit fountains, the sumptuousness of the Grand Court. The glory that was Wanamaker's is gone, a ghost of what was is all that remains.
BUT if you've never seen the magnificent light show, have no memory of John Facenda's deity-like voice narrating, don't recall all that was, then GO GO GO! (Fred Haas is usually at the Wanamaker Organ keyboard on Tuesdays, at noon!)
