A Brandywine Christmas meander has been part of my family's holiday celebrations since 1970. We'd start with Sunday brunch in the sumptuous Green Room at the Du Pont Hotel, then ramble our way around back roads, with stops at the Delaware Art Museum, the Brandywine River Museum, up hills & down dales, waiting for late afternoon, when we made a beeline to our last official stop - LONGWOOD GARDENS, just a couple miles down Baltimore Pike from the Brandywine River Museum.
In spite of being a longtime Christmas visitor, the first sight inside the Conservatory still leaves me stunned with renewed amazement. Glorious is an understatement!
If the weather isn't icky, we walk the grounds, even in the bracing cold, keeping an eye out for the troop of cats that serve as furry ambassadors to guests from around the world.
Of course, we never miss the Garden Railroad! Located near the Terrace Restaurant, the G-scale model train display is a huge hit with kids & adults.
As dusk, then dark, descends, Longwood Gardens is transformed from impossibly beautiful to flat-out magical, when over 500,000 lights turn the grounds into a glittering wonderland. And then there are the fountains!
Tickets are issued for a specific date and time. Be sure to check out the Top Ten Tips to a delightful visit to Longwood Gardens AND remember that tickets are limited and sell out quickly, so reserve A.S.A.P.
Almost forgot - check out if there are any performances or classes/workshops/lectures when you're there! Even more delightful fun!
